Wood Moisture Equivalent (WME) values are shown for other non-conductive, porous building materials. The nominal depth of the measurement is 3/4 inch (19 mm); this depends on the density and other characteristics of the material being measured. When held against the surface, as shown below, the instrument transmits a signal into the material. Simply hold the instrument with the pins touching the material’s surface and read the moisture level from the LED scale. Hammer electrode – this heavy duty external probe is ideal for conducting frequent moisture measurements in softwood or occasional readings in hardwood.

The Surveymaster also features a green, amber and red LED light scale which provides the user with a DRY (green), RISK (amber) and WET (red) visual indicator of moisture levels.

The actual moisture content of wood is shown on the digital display with the corresponding moisture condition shown on the accompanying scale of color-coded lights. When selecting ‘search mode’, the non-invasive pin-less moisture electrode on the reverse of the instrument is used to detect moisture levels up to nearly 20mm beneath the material surface. This mode is not only ideal for use when invasive measurement methods are impractical, but also for where materials may have surface moisture that adversely affectmeasurements conducted by pin electrodes. The search mode is used to assess the moisture level beneath the surface of solid walls and floors independently of surface conditions. The higher the moisture content, the higher the reading. Any reading which displays an LED in the red zone, is too damp. The WME value is the theoretical moisture level that would be attained by wood that is in moisture equilibrium with the material being tested. The Surveymaster2 has two different moisture measurement modes. You can either use the non-invasive scanning mode to test without the need to use any pins, or use the built-in pins at the top of the meter for a more direct measurement of moisture content. This flexible approach to moisture measurement caters for practically any application.

To use the Deep Wall Probe, drill two clearance holes 1/4 in. (6 mm) in diameter and approximately 1 1/2 in. (40 mm) apart to the required depth. With condensation you would expect higher levels of moisture on the surface which can be determined with the pin-probes and lower moisture as you go deeper in the wall shown via the non-invasive sub-surface mode. Simply hold the meter against the wall and the unit will scan (using the capacitance method), typically up to 19mm from the surface. Where moisture is located, the readings from the meter, which are displayed as digits on the LCD, increase significantly. (Note: Metal also increases the readings of capacitance meters).
