Then, in August 1914, three Coldstream Battalions were deployed to France, and saw action at Mons, the Marne, and the Aisne before being committed to the defence of Ypres where the 1st Battalion almost ceased to exist at the Battle of Gheluvelt.

The French Revolutionary War (1793-1802) saw the 1st Battalion deploy to Holland in 1793 and fight at Lincelles (1793) and Tourcoing (1793), before returning home two years later. Anodised Aluminium badges were first introduced in 1948 when the Army Clothing Department asked manufacturers to produce badges from a new metal that would eliminate the need for polishing and would stay bright and clean all the time. An additional benefit for the army was that the new 'Staybright' badges were cheaper than the old brass versions. Few Kings crown Staybrite badges were made but by around 1953 the British Army began to use Staybright cap badges on large scale replacing the old metals versions. Anodised Aluminium consists of anodising which is an electro-plating process resulting in a lightweight shiny badge, this is used because it is cheap, flexible and does not require as much maintenance as brass badges.

It was a happy coincidence that the ploughing of a field that had lain fallow since 1944, exposed human and materiel remains lost in an action fought by units of the Guards Armoured Division in August 1944. However, it is through the hard work and dedication of the JCCC War Detectives and their colleagues of the CWGC that have given me the privilege of being present today of the laying to rest of my Dad, Guardsman David Blyth Coldstream Guards, in this beautiful, serene setting, in the company of contemporaries, some of whom he may have lived, fought and died with. Sadly, this has come too late for his wife, parents and siblings. So, on their behalf, mine, us, “bloody marvellous, Rest in Peace Dad”.

During the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, Coldstreamers served in Flanders, Egypt, at Copenhagen (1807) and in the Peninsula. The 2nd Battalion served in the Malayan Emergency (1948-60) from 1948 to 1950 and in the Mau Mau rebellion in Kenya (1952-60) from 1959 to 1962, in Aden (1963-67) in 1964, in the Cyprus Emergency in 1974 and several tours in Northern Ireland from 1969 onwards. It also served with the British Army of the Rhine in Germany in the 1980s. When the Second World War began, the 1st and 2nd battalions of The Coldstream Guards were part of the British Expeditionary Force in France; whilst the 3rd Battalion was on overseas service in the Middle East. Additional 4th and 5th battalions were also formed for the duration of the war. They fought extensively, as part of the Guards Armoured Division, in North Africa and Europe as dismounted infantry. The 4th battalion first became a motorized battalion in 1940 and then an armoured battalion in 1943. Coldstreamers gave up their tanks at the end of the war, the new battalions were disbanded, and the troops distributed to the 1st and 2nd Guard Training Battalions. After the war, the 1st and 3rd battalions served in Palestine. The 2nd battalion served in the Malayan Emergency. The 3rd battalion was placed in suspended animation in 1959. The remaining battalions served during the Mau Mau rebellion from 1959 to 1962, in Aden in 1964, in Mauritius in 1965, in the Cyprus Emergency in 1974 and several times in Northern Ireland after 1969.

At the outbreak of the First World War, the Coldstream Guards was among the first British regiments to arrive in France after Britain declared war on Germany. In the following battles, it suffered heavy losses, in two cases losing all of its officers. At the First Battle of Ypres, the 1st battalion was virtually annihilated: by 1 November down to 150 men and the Lt Quartermaster. The regiment fought at Mons, Loos, the Somme, Ginchy and in the 3rd Battle of Ypres. The regiment also formed the 4th (Pioneer) Battalion, which was disbanded after the war, in 1919.
